The Shins, based in Portland, Oregon consists of James Russell Mercer on guitar and vocals, Martin Crandall playing keyboard, guitar and bass, bassists and guitarist Dave Hernandez and drummer Jesse Sandoval.
The Shins were originally known as Flake. By 1999 that band had disbanded and Mercer and the remaining members became The Shins. The band's first album, Oh, Inverted World, was released in 2001 to heaps of critical acclaim. Many of the songs from Oh, Inverted World appeared in the indie hit film Garden State and propelled the band into the mainstream.
Their 2007 release and third album, Wincing The Night Away, was a huge commercial success. It debuts at #2 on the U.S. Billboard album charts by selling almost 120,000 copies its first week on sale. It was the largest sales week for an album released by Sub Pop.
