Iron and Wine Biography
Iron and Wine is actually the stage name for one man: Samuel Beam. He was raised in South Carolina but eventually moved to Florida for school. He now lives full-time in Austin, Texas.
Strangely enough, the name Iron and Wine is based on the name of a dietary supplement Beam saw in a grocery store once.
Beam has released a large number of EPs and full-length albums over the years. Starting with his first album, The Creek Drank The Cradle, in 2002 on Sub Pop. That album was done entire by Beam on his own in a small home studio. His first professionally recorded studio release was 2004's Our Endless Numbered Days. That record was the first by Iron and Wine to include other musicians.
Iron and Wine's music has had some mainstream success thanks to Samuel Beam's cover of the Postal Service's "Such Great Heights" in 2002. That version of the song was featured in a variety of television commercials and in the hit indie film Garden State.
